Fred Perry x Raf Simons Summer 2022

Fred Perry x Raf Simons continues to explore its shared love of youth culture with its Summer 2022 collection. Having given us a safety pinned look at punk earlier in the year, this collection is a tribute to Britain’s Northern Soul scene. A signature feature of the collab are modernist staples such as polos, parkas. and rollneck jumpers, emblazoned this time with bespoke patches that reference artwork that appears on fictional vinyl soul records. The imaginative designs feature a bold use of typography with band names that may exist in a parallel universe such as Achroia, Nephology and (my favorite) Radiant Hour.

I love the patch detail cotton jersey black hoodie which seems made for vinyl junkies and DJs and includes all of the band patches and Laurel Wreath and Raf Simons dual branding embroidery for $250, and, perhaps the best parka to ever come from this collab, an oversized cotton shell in black, with the traditional fishtail shape, with epaulets, front storm flap and draw-cords at the waist and hem. The parka has an original Raf Simons illustration on the back along with bespoke printed patches and is available for $1040.

Another favorite is the short sleeve jacquard knit top with Radiant Hour in large gothic type dominating the back of the sweater for $250 and Fred Perry x Raf Simons branding to the front pocket. You’ll also find plenty of outerwear. In addition to the parka, there’s the patch detail track jacket in light pink for $350, a brushed denim jacket in black for $550, a boxy fitting black jacket in cotton gabardine with a distinctive embroidered back graphic, chest patch and chunky lacquered metal Laurel Wreath zip pull, and a basalt navy tailored blazer in a cotton/nylon blend double twill with the traditional three-button fastening and patches on the chest and sleeve for $700. If you’ve admired the work Simons is doing over at Prada since he took over as co-creative director, but can’t afford it; this collab continues to provide a more affordable entry point.

If this collection appeals, you may also want to take a look at Pretty Green’s latest modernist capsule.
